The Experience

“You’ll never forget your first glimpse,” our guide said, and honestly — he was right. We’d left Delhi in the dark, city lights flickering past the window while I tried (and failed) to nap. By the time we reached Agra, there was this soft chill in the air and a kind of hush that surprised me. The driver handed us bottled water and grinned; he seemed to know we were about to see something big. At the entrance, our guide (Amit — patient, quick to laugh) explained how Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his wife. I’d read it before but hearing it there, with morning mist curling around that white marble, made it feel different. My shoes crunched on gravel as we walked closer. There was this faint smell of wet earth and roses — or maybe I imagined that part.

Afterwards, Amit led us through Agra Fort. I didn’t expect to like it so much — red stone walls glowing under a stubborn sun, echoes bouncing off empty courtyards. He pointed out where emperors held court and showed us this spot where you could see the Taj Mahal in the distance (it looked almost unreal from there). We wandered for a bit longer than planned (sorry driver), just soaking in how peaceful it felt compared to earlier crowds. Then back to Delhi through afternoon traffic — horns blaring, snack wrappers everywhere — but honestly my head was still full of marble patterns and those early morning shadows at the real Taj Mahal.
