The Experience

He’s holding out a bottle of water before I’ve even finished blinking away the sleep — our driver, Rajesh, cheerful at 3:15 AM (how do people do that?). The city’s still dark as we leave Delhi behind, headlights weaving through trucks loaded with who-knows-what. I try to nap but end up watching the road signs flick by on the Yamuna Expressway. Our guide is waiting near the entrance when we pull up — I’m honestly relieved because the ticket line looks wild already. She hands us our passes and steers us right past everyone (I catch a few jealous glances). Walking into the Taj Mahal is almost too much at first — it’s quiet except for birds and a few camera shutters. The marble feels cool under my hand, and there’s this faint scent of wet earth from last night’s rain. Our guide points out tiny details in the carvings that I’d never have noticed alone. We grab breakfast at the DoubleTree after wandering Agra Fort — which is massive and red and full of echoes. At one point our guide laughs when I try to say “Itimad-ud-Daulah” — apparently my accent means “potato” in Hindi? Anyway, Baby Taj is smaller but almost more peaceful than its famous sibling. There are kids playing cricket outside its walls. We linger longer than planned.

The drive back to Delhi is quieter; everyone sort of drifts off or stares out at fields sliding by. Rajesh asks if we want music but nobody answers — not because we’re rude, just full in that way you get after seeing something big. He drops us at our hotel door around sunset.
