The Experience

We reached Agra just as the sun was starting to burn off that early haze — not sure if it was nerves or excitement but I felt both. I tried to pronounce “Itimad-ud-Daulah” when we got to the so-called Baby Taj (Ashok grinned and said I was close enough). It’s smaller than the main mausoleum but honestly just as detailed, with these tiny mosaic flowers you’d miss if you rushed. We wandered through cool marble corridors while Ashok explained about Nur Jahan building it for her father — I didn’t expect to feel moved by that story. Afterward came lunch at a hotel that smelled like cardamom and fresh bread; I probably ate too much naan but who cares? The AC was a blessing after all that sun.

Agra Fort surprised me — it’s huge, red sandstone everywhere, echoing footsteps in empty courtyards. You can see all the way back toward the Taj from one of the balconies (Ashok pointed out where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his own son; wild family drama). There were families picnicking under shady trees inside, kids chasing each other while their parents shared snacks. By then my feet hurt but I still wanted to see more — there’s something about wandering those old halls with someone local who knows every corner.

The drive back to Delhi felt quieter somehow. Maybe we were tired or maybe just full from lunch and stories. There’s a kind of peace you get after seeing somewhere so famous actually live up to its reputation — not perfect or postcard-like, just real. I keep thinking about that first glimpse of marble through morning mist; it sticks with you longer than you expect.
