The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the Taj Mahal itself—it was the soft shuffle of feet on marble as we walked up before most of the crowds. Our driver picked us up right outside our hotel in Delhi (he even had cold water ready), and after a surprisingly smooth ride down the Yamuna Expressway, we met our Agra guide—Amit—who greeted us like he’d been waiting all morning just for us. He handed over our tickets (no lines, thank god) and led us through the gates. The air smelled faintly of jasmine from someone’s perfume nearby, or maybe it was just my nerves.

Standing in front of the Taj Mahal is weirdly quiet. Even with people around, there’s this hush—almost like you’re not supposed to talk too loud. Amit told us stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz that I’d never heard before (I tried to repeat one later but totally blanked). After lunch we visited Itmad-ud-Daulah—the “Baby Taj.” Not as famous as its big sibling but so peaceful; hardly anyone else around, just birds flicking through the gardens. On the drive back to Delhi, I watched fields blur past and realized how much history fits into one day here. Still thinking about that marble under my feet.
