The Experience

We were already on the road before Delhi even started to wake up — maybe 3 AM? The city was all shadows and stray dogs, but our driver found us right on time. I dozed off somewhere along the expressway, woke up to the first hint of pink in the sky. By the time we rolled into Agra, I could smell something sweet and smoky in the air — maybe someone’s morning chai stand. Our guide, Saurabh, met us with this sleepy grin like he’d done this a thousand times but still liked it. He handed me bottled water and joked about my jetlag (accurate). No crowds yet at the Taj Mahal gate; just a few other early risers shuffling their feet and whispering.

Walking through that archway — you know the one — it’s suddenly just there, floating above its own reflection. The marble felt cool under my hand. Saurabh told stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz that made me weirdly emotional (I’m blaming lack of sleep). The sun hit everything gold for maybe five minutes, then it was just soft again. My legs were tired by then but Saurabh pointed out carvings I’d have missed on my own (he knew exactly where to stand for the breeze too). There was an option for another stop but honestly by midday I was full up on history and ready for AC again. The drive back was quieter; Delhi felt louder after all that marble silence.
