The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Delhi hotel or airport before sunrise, then a drive or train ride to Agra. You'll arrive at Taj Mahal as light breaks, when the marble shifts from grey to white to gold and the crowds are still thin. Your private guide walks you through the grounds and inside the mausoleum: the ivory-white marble tomb Shah Jahan built in 1632 for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, finished in 1643 and named a UNESCO site in 1983. There's no fixed schedule here. You stay as long as you want.

After Taj Mahal, you'll move to Agra Fort, the walled city where every early Mughal emperor lived until the capital shifted to Delhi in 1638. The fort sits on an ancient site and is itself a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your guide shows you the palaces and chambers inside the walls: again, at your own pace. Lunch happens at one of Agra's established restaurants (included if you choose that option at checkout).
