Summary

Buggy adventure from Punta Cana to Macao Beach with local flavors

You’ll get picked up from your hotel in Punta Cana for a buggy adventure through the countryside, tasting fresh chocolate and coffee at a local farm, swimming in a cool cenote cave, then ending with sand between your toes at Macao Beach. Expect laughter, splashes, real Dominican flavors — and maybe mud you’ll find days later.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Hands covered in mud before we’d even left the ranch — that’s how our Punta Cana buggy tour started. The guide, José, grinned as he handed me goggles (“You’ll thank me later!”) and ran through safety stuff in a mix of Spanish and English. I was half-listening, half-watching the line of buggies revving up under palm trees. There was this earthy smell in the air, like wet clay after rain, even though it hadn’t rained yet. We picked shared buggies (my driving is questionable), and off we went — engines coughing and everyone laughing at the first big splash.

The track wound past fields where kids waved and dogs barked at us like we were some kind of parade. We stopped at a family-run farm for chocolate and coffee tasting; honestly, I didn’t expect to like the cacao paste straight up but it was sort of bittersweet and gritty in a good way. The woman serving us — Marta — showed us how they roast beans over an open fire. She let me try saying “gracias” with her accent, which made her laugh (I’m not great at rolling my R’s). The whole place smelled like roasted beans and sugarcane smoke.

After that, there was this part where we drove through puddles so deep my shoes squelched for ages. Then suddenly everything went quiet as we reached a cenote hidden behind thick green brush. Cold water on sunburned skin — I still think about that shock when I jumped in. Nobody rushed us; José just sat on a rock telling stories about his grandmother swimming here as a kid. The light filtered down all blue-green and wobbly on the cave walls.

Last stop: Macao Beach. Sand everywhere (I found it in my pockets later), wild waves full of local surfers shouting back and forth, sun starting to dip lower but still hot enough to make me squint. We took silly photos by our muddy buggy — proof for friends back home who wouldn’t believe how much dirt you can collect in half a day out here.
