The Experience
I still have dirt under my nails from yesterday. The ATV engines were already rumbling when we got to the ranch in Punta Cana—our guide, Luis, handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew what was coming. I could smell the wet earth before we even set off. There’s something wild about driving through those muddy trails, palms whipping past, everyone laughing when someone (usually me) hit a puddle too fast. The main keyword here is “adventure” but honestly it felt more like letting go for a few hours.
We stopped at this family-run farm tucked right into the trees. The air was thick with roasted cacao and something sweet I couldn’t place—turns out it was Mama Guna tea. Luis showed us how they grind coffee by hand; I tried but mostly made a mess. Li laughed when I tried to say “gracias” with his accent—probably butchered it. We tasted chocolate so fresh it melted on my fingers before it even hit my mouth. I didn’t expect that part to be such a highlight.
The cenote was next—a 25-foot deep cave pool called Los Hoyos del Salado. It looked almost fake, the water so clear you could see every ripple from above. I hesitated at first (it’s cold!) but jumped anyway; the shock woke me up better than any coffee. After drying off in the sun, we rode out again until suddenly the trees opened up and there was Macao Beach—wide sand, turquoise waves, kids playing soccer barefoot near the waterline. We just sat there for a while, salt on our skin and not really talking much. That’s what sticks with me most.
