Two hours of rough terrain instead of paved roads

A buggy tour in rural Puerto Plata takes you on extreme paths through the backcountry, with a stop at Rancho Manuel in the mountains for country coffee and a view of Isabel de Torres, then a coastal break at Playa Bergantín. The tour includes a protective helmet, seat belts, water, and a guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French; you choose between a buggy for two people or a family buggy that fits three to four.

2h–3h

Step-by-step itinerary

Buggy tour with coffee and beach visit

  • Drive 25 minutes to Rancho Manuel
  • Enjoy country coffee and crafts view
  • Drive 35 minutes to Playa Bergantín
  • Relax and take pictures at the beach
  • Return to tour starting point

The Experience

The ride starts 25 minutes from your pickup point and heads straight to Rancho Manuel, a mountain ranch where you get a cup of country coffee and time to look out at Isabel de Torres and browse Dominican and Haitian crafts. From there it's another 35 minutes of buggy driving down to Playa Bergantín, where you have 30 minutes to swim, take pictures or order food at the beach. The return trip brings you back to where you started, so the whole outing runs between two and three hours.

You ride in a buggy with a protective helmet, seat belts and a bottle of water; the vehicle and guide are part of the package. The paths are genuinely rough — muddy or dusty depending on the weather — so this is not a smooth tour road. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French and drives the whole route, handling the terrain while you sit back and take in the backcountry and the mountain views.

The tour works for families and pairs: you pick either the two-person buggy or the family buggy that holds three to four people at checkout. Children can ride from age two, though the driver must be at least 18. If you want lunch at the beach, that costs extra and you arrange it separately.

What’s included

  • Buggy ride with a live guide in English, Spanish, Italian or French.

Is this one for you?Choose the two-person buggy if it is just you and one other person, or the family buggy if you are traveling with children or a group of three to four — both follow the same route and stop at the same places, so the difference is just who rides with you.

Top questions

How rough are the paths on this buggy tour?

The paths are extreme — muddy or dusty depending on weather — and that is the whole point of the tour. You are not on paved roads; you are riding through backcountry terrain that a regular car cannot handle, which is why the buggy exists.

What is there to do at Playa Bergantín?

Playa Bergantín is where you stop for 30 minutes to swim in the sea, take pictures and order food if you want it. Food has an extra cost and you buy it there; it is not included in the tour price.

Can I bring my children on this buggy tour?

Children can ride from age two, but whoever is driving the buggy must be at least 18 years old. The buggy has seat belts and you get a protective helmet for the ride.

What do I get included with the buggy tour?

The tour includes the buggy ride with a guide, a protective helmet, seat belts, a bottle of water, and pickup from your hotel or meeting point. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French and drives the whole route.

Is this buggy tour suitable if I have a bad back?

The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries because of the rough terrain and the bumps that come with it. If you have concerns about your back, check with the operator before booking.
