The Experience

You pick up a helmet at Benerito Ranch and climb into your buggy while the guide runs through the safety rules. From there, the day is off-road: you drive through sugarcane fields where the guide explains the cutting process and lets you taste the cane itself. The route takes you to a Batey, a village built around the cane harvest, where you meet the families who do the work and see how they live—not as a performance, but as an actual exchange with the children and residents there.

After the village, you head to the Chavón River for a swim in water that has doubled as a film set for Anaconda and Rambo II. The river is the break in the day, a chance to cool off before the next stop. A local named Nilo cooks lunch over a wood fire—cassava, plantain, salami and tropical fruits—and you eat by the water. The guide stays with you throughout, speaking English, Spanish or French depending on the group.

The whole tour runs about five hours from pickup at your hotel to drop-off back at the port of La Romana.
