The experience
The day starts in hill tribe villages (Long Neck Karen, Pa Long, Pa Ka Yor, La Hu and Yao), where you walk through their living areas, photograph their daily life and browse their market. From there the route climbs to Doi Tung Palace, the residence of Grandmother Srinagarindra, built in native Lanna style and surrounded by flower gardens and trees. The guide describes the palace and its grounds in English. The drive itself carries you through mountain roads and highland views that frame the northern landscape.
The Golden Triangle section puts you on a boat along the Khong River to watch the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar converge from the water. After the boat ride, you visit the Hall of Opium Museum to see the history and artifacts of opium trade, then cross into Laos at Donsao Market: a special business area where you can shop without a passport stamp. The same area holds a Chinese temple with a 19-ton jade Goddess of Mercy statue, a golden-tower casino, and Kapok tree park with giant trees where you can buy Laos and Chinese goods. The tour ends at Mae Sai, Thailand's northernmost market and shopping area on the Myanmar border.
The guide is a woman who speaks English and manages the group's pace. The operator notes she is friendly, positive and respectful of Thai culture. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with one bottle of water included, and the tour is covered by travel insurance under Thai law. The itinerary is fixed but can be adjusted for a group booking.
