Feed playful wildlife by the river and hike to a mountain temple skywalk

A full-day guided tour through northern Thailand's Mae Sai region, visiting Wat Tham Pla fish cave, hilltribe villages, the Scorpion Temple with Sky Walk access, and the Golden Triangle viewpoint on the Kong River. An English-speaking guide leads the route in an air-conditioned vehicle with insurance, water and lunch at a riverside restaurant included; entry fees to some sites and boat passage are paid on the day.

10h–11h

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore temples, markets, and Golden Triangle

  • Visit Blue Temple
  • See Hilltribes villages
  • Visit Wat Tham Pla fish and monkey cave
  • Explore Scorpion Temple and Sky Walk
  • Enjoy boat ride on Kong River
  • Shop at Sailom Joy market
  • Visit Hall of Opium Museum

The Experience

The tour starts with the Blue Temple, a modern Lana-style structure with blue murals and white Buddha images, then moves through five hilltribe villages—Kayah, Long Neck Karen, Lahu, Akha and Yao—where you can see how each group lives. From there you head to Wat Tham Pla, an old temple mixing Thai and Myanmar Buddhist architecture, where you walk into the fish cave and monkey cave; the monkeys are accustomed to visitors and you can feed them fruit. The guide handles the route and timing, so you move through each stop without arranging transport between them.

The Scorpion Temple sits on a hilltop in the far north, and the Sky Walk—a glass-floored platform—lets you look out over Myanmar from the Thai side. After that comes the Golden Triangle itself, where you stand at the point where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, and a 50-minute boat ride along the Kong River takes you along the actual border. Lunch is at a riverside restaurant with views of the water; the menu is Thai food and you order and pay at the counter. The Hall of Opium Museum rounds out the day with displays on opium history and hilltribe traditions, and you finish at Sai Lom Joy market on the Myanmar border before heading back.

The driver is licensed and the vehicle carries Thai insurance, so you're covered for the road. The tour runs about 10 to 11 hours and includes the vehicle, a bottle of water, and the guide's time; entry to the hilltribe villages, the Opium Museum, and the Kong River boat are separate charges paid on site. The guide speaks English and can adjust the pace or stops based on the group's interests or energy.

Top questions

What is Wat Tham Pla and what do you do there?

Wat Tham Pla is an old temple with Thai and Myanmar Buddhist architecture, built in a natural setting. You walk into the fish cave—where the temple gets its name—and the monkey cave, where you can feed the live monkeys fruit and take photos with them.

Can I see Myanmar on this tour, or just look at it from Thailand?

You see Myanmar from the Thailand side only. The Scorpion Temple sits on a hilltop with views across the border, and the Kong River boat ride runs along the water that marks the boundary, so you're always on Thai territory.

What's included in the price and what do I pay extra for?

The tour includes the vehicle, guide, insurance and water; lunch at the riverside restaurant is your choice and cost. Entry to the hilltribe villages, the Hall of Opium Museum and the Kong River boat are paid separately at each site when you arrive.

How long is the boat ride on the Kong River?

The boat runs for about 50 minutes along the Kong River at the Golden Triangle, letting you see the three-country border from the water.

Is this tour physically demanding?

The tour involves walking and climbing—including up to the Scorpion Temple and through the caves at Wat Tham Pla—so a moderate level of fitness helps. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or very young children under 5.

What language does the guide speak?

The guide speaks English and Norwegian, so communication is straightforward if you speak either language.
