The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Chiang Rai hotel and heads to the White Temple, a Buddhist temple in Pa O Don Chai that draws both Thai and foreign visitors year-round. From there, the route moves to the Blue Temple, where a 6.5-meter Buddha image sits inside the Ubosot; the image contains 88,000 smaller Buddha figures and rings of gold and silver beneath it. You'll also walk through the Black House, a complex of 40 buildings made mostly of dark teak wood, housing paintings, sculptures, animal skins and other collections set across large gardens.

The Golden Triangle viewpoint lets you see where the Mekong River and Ruak River meet, marking the borders between Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. The Hall of Opium Museum at the Golden Triangle Park uses multimedia and exhibitions to trace the region's history—starting with a 137-meter dark tunnel leading to an artificial poppy field, then moving through zones on opium in Siam, the opium wars and efforts to rehabilitate communities in the former drug-trafficking zone. A visit to the Long Neck Hilltribe village follows, where you meet members of the Padaung Karen tribe who migrated to the area from Myanmar.

The final stop is Chui Fong Tea Plantation in Mae Chan district, known for terraced tea fields and the scent of tea paired with the plantation's desserts. An English-speaking guide leads the entire route, and lunch is provided. The remaining time accounts for travel between sites and the uphill and downhill walking at each location. You return to your Chiang Rai hotel at the end of the day.
