The experience

The van picks you up at your hotel between 8:00 and 8:30 am, heading first to the White Temple. Built by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat as both a memorial and a gift to his hometown, the temple's Ubosot (ordination hall) is the centerpiece: an intricate white structure that stands apart from the darker, more traditional temples across Thailand. From there the route moves to the Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, completed in 2016 and still relatively unknown to most visitors despite its artistic richness. The ordination hall rivals the White Temple in detail and execution, created by former disciples of the White Temple's builder.

After the temples comes the Black House, Baan Dam, an eclectic creation by national artist Thawan Duchanee spread across roughly 40 buildings of varying shapes in a garden setting: part art studio, part museum, all unconventional. Next is Long Neck Village, home to the Padaung Karen people who migrated from Yunnan Province in central China around 1000 AD and later relocated to Myanmar before settling in Thailand. The tour then stops at Choui Fong Tea Plantation, a high-mountain operation spanning over 1,000 rais where tea is hand-picked at peak ripeness. Lunch happens here or nearby, giving you a break before the final leg.

The afternoon takes you to the Golden Triangle, the borderland region where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Here you can visit the Hall of Opium Museum, founded in 1990 to preserve tools, scales, pipes and other paraphernalia from opium cultivation and trade as the items became harder to find. The museum also displays poppy flowers, the source plant itself. You'll have time to view the Mekong River before heading back to your hotel, arriving between 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
