The experience
The day starts with pickup between 8:00 and 8:30 AM from your hotel within 3 kilometers of the Chiang Rai Clock Tower. The first stop is Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, where the intricate white facade is adorned with glass and mirrors that catch the light. From there you move to Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, to see its deep blue hues and detailed murals and sculptures. The Black House Museum, created by artist Thawan Duchanee, follows: a complex of traditional Thai buildings filled with striking artworks that stand apart from the temple visits.
After lunch, the afternoon takes you to the Long Neck Karen Village to learn about the Karen people's traditions and the women who wear brass rings, then to the Hall of Opium Museum for a look at the region's opium trade history. The Golden Triangle comes next, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet at the Mekong River. You'll see the river itself and learn about the area's past. Before returning to your hotel, you stop at Choui Fong Tea Plantation to walk through the tea fields, take in the views and sample their teas.
The tour includes water, lunch, a live guide speaking English or Thai, and an air-conditioned vehicle with insurance. Entry tickets to the museums and villages are optional: you can buy them as part of the tour package at checkout, or pay at each site as you arrive. Dietary needs like vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free meals can be arranged if you mention them when booking.
