The Experience

I’ll be honest, I signed up for this Chiang Rai temples and Golden Triangle tour mostly because I’d seen photos of that wild White Temple online. Lunch was just down the road: simple Thai dishes, nothing fancy but exactly what I needed after wandering around in the heat.

The Blue Temple was next. It’s hard to describe that color—almost electric blue, but softer somehow. Inside, people moved quietly around a huge Buddha statue while a monk swept the floor in slow circles. Noi told us about the symbolism behind the colors; I tried to listen but got distracted by the way sunlight hit the painted walls. We also stopped at Baan Dam—the Black House—which felt like stepping into someone’s dream (or maybe nightmare?). Animal bones everywhere, dark wood creaking underfoot. Not sure I understood it all, but it stuck with me.

Visiting the Karen Long Neck Village was complicated for me—fascinating and a little uncomfortable at times. The women smiled as we walked through; one showed me how she winds her brass coils (Li laughed when I tried to say thank you in Karen—definitely butchered it). There were kids playing with sticks and chickens darting around. It felt realer than any museum could ever be.

The last part was quieter: drifting along the Mekong at the Golden Triangle where Thailand meets Laos and Myanmar. The water looked muddy but peaceful, and Noi pointed out landmarks on each shore. There was a moment where everyone just went silent—maybe tiredness or maybe just taking it all in. On the drive back to Chiang Mai, I kept thinking about those flashes of color and sound—the temples, laughter in the village, river breeze—and how they all sort of blur together now.
