Four temples and a border crossing in one day from Chiang Mai

A one-day tour from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai's most photographed temples and the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. The route covers the White Temple's white sculptures, the Blue Temple's vivid murals, the Black House's carved wood, a visit to the Long Neck Karen Village, and a boat ride on the Mekong River. Hotel pickup, lunch, an English-speaking guide and an air-conditioned vehicle are included; the full day runs 14 to 15 hours with travel time built in.

Step-by-step itinerary

Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai temple tour

  • Relax at Mae Khachan Hot Spring
  • Visit White Temple and have lunch nearby
  • Explore Blue Temple
  • Tour Black House Museum
  • Meet Long Neck Karen Tribe
  • Boat ride on Mekong River at Golden Triangle

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel and a drive north toward Chiang Rai. On the way, you stop at Mae Khachan Hot Spring, a natural pit stop where you can soak your feet in hot pools or boil eggs in the thermal water. From there the route moves into the temples themselves: the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is an art exhibition built as a Buddhist temple, designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, where you photograph white sculptures depicting Buddhist beliefs. Lunch happens at a local restaurant near the temple.

After lunch, you visit the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Seur Ten), designed in contemporary art style with blue and gold colors, vivid wall paintings and ornate sculptures. Next is the Black House Museum (Baan Dam), created by artist Thawan Duchanee in unconventional Northern Thai architecture with intricate wood carvings. You then meet members of the Long Neck Karen Tribe at their village — women wearing brass rings on their necks. The final stop is the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar converge; you join a boat ride along the Mekong River before the drive back to Chiang Mai.

An English-speaking guide leads the group through each stop. The vehicle is air-conditioned, bottled water is provided throughout the day, and accidental insurance is included. All entry fees and taxes are covered in the price.

Top questions

What is the White Temple and why do people photograph it so much?

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is an art exhibition designed as a Buddhist temple by famous Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. The entire structure is white, and it features stunning sculptures depicting Buddhist beliefs and stories, which is why it is one of the most photographed temples in Thailand.

Do I get to actually go inside the temples or just see them from outside?

You visit and enter the temples themselves — the White Temple, Blue Temple and Black House Museum. You walk through them, see the sculptures and murals up close, and have time to photograph the interiors and details.

What happens at the Long Neck Karen Village?

At the Long Neck Karen Village you meet members of the Long Neck Karen Tribe, women who wear many brass rings stacked on their necks. It is a cultural encounter included as part of the day's route through Chiang Rai.

Is lunch included, and what kind of food will I eat?

Lunch is included at a local restaurant near the White Temple. The specific menu is not detailed in advance, but it is a meal at a local establishment serving the area.
