The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel and a drive north to Mae Kachan Hot Spring, where the mineral water sits at 90 degrees Celsius: hot enough to cook eggs in. You'll soak your feet in the natural pools and eat a small breakfast of boiled eggs dipped in sauce before the guide moves on to the temples.

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) comes first: a striking all-white structure outside Chiang Rai town, its plaster embedded with pieces of glass that catch the sun. It's one of Thailand's most recognizable temples and draws both Thai and foreign visitors throughout the day. The Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) follows: a sapphire-colored Buddhist temple painted in eye-catching blue with gold overlays, its great hall centered on a large white Buddha statue surrounded by contemporary Buddhist art. Neither temple is crowded in the same way. The Blue Temple is no longer an active monastery, so the atmosphere differs from working temples elsewhere.

The Red Temple (Wat Huay Pla Kang) is the visual anchor of the tour: a massive white statue of Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, towers over the countryside and can be seen from miles away. You can walk the temple grounds to see the colorful Chinese-influenced architecture and intricate details, then take an elevator up inside the Guan Yin statue itself for panoramic views over Chiang Rai and the surrounding hills. The elevator fee is included. The large red-and-gold prayer hall holds statues, murals and traditional Buddhist artwork. After the temples, you visit Long Neck Village to walk through a traditional Karen community, learn about the history and cultural significance of the brass neck rings, see traditional houses and handicrafts, and interact respectfully with villagers. The entrance fee to the village (300 baht per person) is separate from the tour price. The return drive to Chiang Mai takes the afternoon.
