The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel at 7am and a drive north toward Chiang Rai. After about an hour, you reach Mae Kachan Hot Spring, where you can stretch, use facilities and see Thailand's highest geyser before continuing. The route then heads to Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, where the entire structure is built in white with intricate glass inlays, sculptural details and murals designed by a renowned Thai artist. You walk through the grounds to see the architecture up close: the white building adorned with glass catches light differently depending on the time of day and angle.

From there, the tour moves to the Golden Triangle in Chiang Saen, the northernmost region of Thailand where the Mekong River forms the physical border between Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Lunch happens at a local restaurant in this area. After eating, you get panoramic views over the Mekong and the confluence where the Ruak and Mekong rivers meet, marking the three-country junction. The guide points out Wat Prathat Phu Khao and explains the geography and history of the region. An optional boat ride along the Mekong costs extra (around 300 THB) if you want a closer view of the river itself.

The final stop is an Akha hill tribe village, where you experience the culture and daily life of the Akha people. The return journey to Chiang Mai takes about three hours, with arrival back at your hotel between 8pm and 9pm.
