Mae Kachan's water reaches 90°C and locals boil eggs in it; you soak your feet there first.
A full-day tour from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai covers five major sites: Mae Kachan Hot Spring, Wat Rong Khun (White Temple), Baan Dam Museum, Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple), and the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. Round-trip hotel pickup, English-speaking guide, lunch and water are included; the drive is long (about 13 to 14 hours total), and dress code applies at the temples. The Experience
The day starts before dawn with pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel, then a long drive north into Chiang Rai Province. Your first stop is Mae Kachan Hot Spring, where naturally heated water reaches 90°C—hot enough that locals demonstrate by boiling eggs in the pools. You wade in to soak your feet only; full-body immersion is not permitted. From there the route moves through the province's most photographed temples: Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, a privately owned art installation designed to look like a Buddhist shrine, opened in 1997 and instantly recognizable for its all-white exterior and intricate carvings. Next comes Baan Dam Museum, a compound of traditional northern Thai buildings mixed with contemporary architecture, a stark visual contrast to the White Temple.
The afternoon brings Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, distinguished by its vivid blue coloring and elaborate carved details, then the Golden Triangle itself—the point where the Mekong River forms the border between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. This region was once notorious for the opium trade; now it's a viewpoint and market area. A boat trip on the Mekong is optional and costs extra. If you skip the Karen Long-neck Village (also optional, also a separate fee), the guide will ask you to wait about an hour while others visit; the nearby market gives you somewhere to spend that time. Lunch and drinking water come with the tour, along with seasonal fruit.
The return journey to Chiang Mai takes the evening, with arrival at your hotel between 9 PM and 9:30 PM depending on traffic and location. Wear long trousers and closed shoes at the temples; flip-flops, tank tops and short pants are not allowed. The tour is shared, so the driver picks up other guests in sequence—patience at your hotel in the morning is part of the arrangement.
