The experience

The day starts at Choui Fong Tea Plantation, where you walk through tea fields and drink Chiang Rai's signature Oolong tea while looking out over the hills. From there the route climbs to Doi Chang Moob viewpoint on the Thai-Myanmar border, a stop built for the panoramic views and the photographs: misty highlands and the drop into Myanmar spread out below. The drive then takes you into the serene villages of Ban Pha Hee and Ban Pha Mi, where you can order locally sourced coffee and sit with the rhythm of mountain village life. This is where many travelers eat lunch, though food and drinks are not included in the tour price.

Mae Sai, Thailand's northernmost town, holds the next two stops. Doi Wao Temple sits on a hilltop, and the glass skywalk built there lets you step out over the border into Myanmar: the views stretch across and the moment is built for the camera. After that comes the Golden Triangle itself, the exact point where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet at the confluence of two rivers. The Hall of Opium Museum sits nearby and walks you through the region's opium trade history and the routes that shaped it. The drive home follows rice paddies, villages and rolling hills back toward Chiang Rai.
