Step-by-step itinerary

Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen tour

  • Travel to Golden Triangle area
  • Boat trip on Mae Khong River
  • Visit ancient ruins and temples in Chiang Saen
  • Explore Chiang Saen National Museum

The experience

Roundtrip transport from your Chiang Mai hotel gets you to the Golden Triangle at Sob Ruak, the point where the Mekong and Ruak rivers meet and three national borders converge. From there, you board a boat for a cruise along the Mekong that carries you downriver to Chiang Saen, the ancient capital of the Lanna Kingdom founded in 1260. The river itself is the route: you watch the landscape and the far banks of Laos and Myanmar pass as the guide narrates the region's history and the geography that defines it.

In Chiang Saen, you walk through ruins and temples that span centuries. Wat Pa Sak Ngarm, built in the mid-14th century, blends architectural styles from the Hariphunchai, Sukhothai and Bagan periods into a single stupa. Wat Phra Thad Jom Kitti sits on a rise overlooking the river itself. The Chiang Saen Museum (closed Mondays) holds sculptures, pottery and Buddha images from the town's role as a major Buddhist and trade center during the Lanna period. A guide in English or Thai walks you through each site and explains what you are standing in front of.

The tour runs about three and a half hours from start to finish. Comfortable walking shoes matter because the temple grounds and museum require you to move on foot. Children under 11 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Infants ride free.
