The tour starts with pickup from your Chiang Rai hotel and a drive into the mountains toward Doi Tung, where the road climbs through scenic terrain. At the summit you get a panoramic view across Thailand into Myanmar. From there the route descends to a former opium-cultivation village, now home to the Hall of Opium Museum, which documents the region's history through the crop that once defined it. The guide walks you through the exhibits and the surrounding hill-tribe settlement.

Next comes Mae Fah Luang Garden, a manicured botanical space with terraced flower beds, followed by the Royal Villa — the former home of the Princess Mother, Srinagarindra. The villa is built from recycled pine and salvaged teak, and the guide explains its construction and significance. Nearby stands Wat Phra That Doi Tung, a temple erected in 911 AD and considered the oldest and holiest sanctuary in the region. The route then heads to the Golden Triangle, the frontier where the Mekong River separates Thailand from Myanmar and Laos. You'll stand at the point where the Ruak and Mekong rivers meet and the three borders converge. An optional boat ride on the Mekong (300 THB extra, paid on the day) gives a closer view of the river and the landscape across it.

After lunch at a local buffet restaurant, the tour stops in Mae Sai, a border town with a market for shopping, then moves on to Chiang Saen itself. The ancient city was abandoned for over a century and has been partially revived; you'll see the double city walls and the ruins scattered across the site. The guide provides context for what you're standing in front of — the layout, the history, what each structure was. The return drive to Chiang Rai takes the late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel by early evening.
