Your First Breath Underwater: Lanzarote's Clearest Dive Spot

You meet your PADI instructor at Playa Chica, get fitted into full dive gear, and descend into transparent Atlantic water where you'll see octopuses, seahorses, cuttlefish and angelotes. The instructor stays with you the entire dive, checking your breathing and pointing out marine life. The Experience

So you're standing at Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen at 12:45 on a Saturday, and the water is so clear you can see the bottom before you even get in. That's the thing about diving in Lanzarote — the Atlantic here isn't murky or cold or intimidating. It's transparent, warm, and full of actual life: octopuses that move like they're thinking about you, seahorses hanging in the seagrass, cuttlefish changing color, angelotes (a type of shark, but small and harmless) cruising past like they own the place. You meet your PADI instructor from Atlantis Diving, who's been doing this for over 15 years, and they walk you through the gear — how to breathe, how to clear your mask if water gets in, what to do if you panic (you won't). The group stays under 8 people, which means your instructor is actually watching you, not herding a crowd.

The scuba try-dive itself is about two hours total, and it moves at your pace. You're not racing through a checklist or trying to keep up with experienced divers. Your instructor stays with you the whole time, checking in constantly, pointing out the cuttlefish or the octopus hiding in the rocks. The equipment — wetsuit, tank, regulator, weights, the whole setup — is included, so you show up with nothing but your swimsuit and your curiosity. You do need to tell them your height, weight and shoe size when you book so the gear fits right, but that's it. No certifications, no prerequisites, no "you should probably have done this before." Lanzarote's water does most of the work for you.

The meeting point is Playa Chica itself, not some dive center you have to find first. Look for the Atlantis Diving van covered in underwater photos — locals know the operation, so if you're lost, ask anyone on the beach. Monday through Saturday, same time: 12:45. The price drops if you're going with someone else (70 euros per person for two, 60 for three or more), and activity insurance is built in. Limited spots each day, which is why the groups stay small.
