You learn to breathe underwater on two guided dives in Lanzarote's volcanic waters, starting shallow and building to 12 meters. The course includes all equipment, an experienced instructor, hotel pickup, and insurance. Most people feel genuinely confident by the second dive, which is why two dives matter more than one.
The second dive is always easier than the first. By then your breathing settles, the equipment stops feeling foreign, and you can actually look around instead of concentrating on not panicking. That's the real reason this course includes two dives instead of one — it's not just about logging hours, it's about the moment when scuba stops being a technique you're learning and becomes something you're doing. Both dives happen in Lanzarote's volcanic waters off Costa Teguise, with the first one staying shallow at 3 to 5 meters and the second going down to 12 meters, each lasting around 40 minutes.
You start on shore, which matters more than it sounds. No boat, no descent down a ladder while the ocean rocks beneath you — you walk into the water from the beach with your instructor right there, and the whole thing unfolds at a pace that lets you actually think. The safety briefing is clear and unhurried, and your instructor stays with you the entire time, not hovering but present, watching for the small signs that you're comfortable or need a moment. Lanzarote's water is unusually clear for the Atlantic, so even at 12 meters on the second dive, you're seeing the volcanic rock formations and the light filtering down, not just murk and your own anxiety.
Groups stay small, which is the difference between feeling like one of twelve tourists and feeling like someone learning something real. Private transportation picks you up, so you're not figuring out buses with a wetsuit in your bag. Equipment is included — tank, regulator, BCD, the works — along with your instructor's certification and insurance that covers you for the day. Coffee or tea comes after, which sounds minor until you're sitting there still buzzing from breathing underwater for the first time and you need a moment to process it.
