The Experience

I’ll be honest, I almost bailed when I saw the wetsuit—never worn one before, and it’s clingier than I expected. Our guide, Marta, just grinned and said everyone looks awkward their first time. She handed me the mask and showed how to check the straps. There was this salty breeze coming off the bay, mixed with sunscreen and something plasticky from the gear. We shuffled down to the water together—me, two other newbies from Germany, and Marta humming some tune I didn’t recognize.

The first dive was shallow, maybe six meters deep. Not gonna lie, my heart thudded at first breath underwater. It’s quieter down there than I thought—just bubbles and muffled clicks. Marta pointed out these tiny neon fish darting around black volcanic rocks. At one point a crab scuttled past my glove so fast I almost yelped through my regulator (which apparently sounds hilarious). The second dive went deeper, maybe 10 or 12 meters outside the bay. There was this sudden patch of cold water that made me shiver—and then a big silvery shape slid past in the distance. Maybe a barracuda? Nobody seemed sure but it definitely woke us up.

Back on shore we sat on our towels, eating those little packaged biscuits and drinking water while Marta told us about growing up here—how she learned to swim before she could ride a bike. She laughed when I tried to pronounce “bocinegro” (some kind of fish) and honestly, I still think about that view back toward the cliffs while we dried off in the sun.
