Watch the Atlantic floor from inside a submarine cabin at normal air pressure

Submarine Safaris Lanzarote operates one of only 15 submarines of its kind in the world from Puerto Calero, taking you down to 30 meters to see the ocean floor and marine life without leaving a pressurized cabin. The spacious interior stays at normal atmospheric conditions, so pregnant women, heart patients and people with ear problems are unaffected. Free bus service runs daily from Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca to the marina.

Step-by-step itinerary

Submarine dive experience in Lanzarote

  • Arrive at Puerto Calero
  • Board the 44-seat submarine
  • Dive up to 30 meters underwater
  • View marine life through port holes
  • Observe shipwrecks on ocean floor
  • Learn about marine species
  • Receive free color fish charts
  • Complete dive and disembark

The Experience

You board at Puerto Calero's millionaires marina and descend a small ladder into a 44-seat submarine cabin. The dive takes you down to 30 meters—about 100 feet—into the Atlantic, where 22 large portholes line each side. Sea breams, rays, barracuda, eels and groupers move past the glass; shipwrecks rest on the ocean floor below. An audioguide in English, Spanish, Italian, French and six other languages narrates what you're seeing, and free color fish charts help you identify species as they appear.

The cabin maintains normal air pressure throughout, which is why the experience works for people who can't handle pressure changes—pregnant women, those with heart conditions or ear problems, and anyone simply uncomfortable with depth. The whole dive runs about an hour. Afterward, you get free time to explore Puerto Calero itself, and you'll receive a personalized dive certificate to take home. Bring a camera; the portholes frame the marine life clearly enough to photograph.

Getting there is straightforward: free daily bus service picks up from Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca and drops you at the marina. Parking at Puerto Calero is free if you drive. Children from age 2 are welcome; those under 2 cannot enter the submarine. The only physical requirement is the ability to climb down a small ladder to get inside the cabin.

Is this one for you?At around an hour, the dive leaves most of your day open—you can book it in the morning and still have the afternoon free, or fit it into a half-day itinerary without rushing. Top questions

What kind of marine life will I see on the submarine dive?

The submarine passes rays, barracuda, groupers, eels and sea breams as you descend, and shipwrecks sit on the ocean floor below. An audioguide identifies species as they appear, and free color fish charts help you spot them through the portholes.

How deep does the submarine go?

The dive reaches 30 meters—about 100 feet—to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The cabin stays at normal atmospheric pressure, so you don't experience the pressure changes that affect divers in the water.

How do I get to Puerto Calero from my hotel?

Free daily bus service runs from Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca directly to the marina at Puerto Calero. If you drive, parking in the area is free.

Can I bring my children on the submarine?

Children from age 2 are welcome on the dive. Children under 2 cannot enter the submarine.

What happens if I have a heart condition or ear problems?

The submarine cabin maintains normal atmospheric conditions throughout the dive, so heart patients and people with ear problems are not affected in any way by the pressure changes that would occur in open water.

Do I need any diving experience or certification?

No diving experience or certification is required—you're inside a pressurized cabin, not diving in the water. You will receive a personalized dive certificate after the experience.
