See the ocean floor from inside a pressurized cabin, dry and at sea level.

Submarine Safaris operates a 44-seat submarine from Puerto Calero in Lanzarote, descending to 30 meters on the Atlantic floor to view marine life, shipwrecks and the seabed through large portholes while remaining at normal atmospheric pressure. The cabin stays pressurized, so pregnant women, people with heart conditions and those with ear problems are unaffected. Pickup from Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen is included, as is an audioguide in English, Spanish, Italian, French and six other languages, plus a personalized dive certificate.

The Experience

How do you see the ocean floor without a wetsuit, a tank or any diving training? You board a 44-seat submarine at Puerto Calero and descend to 30 meters while sitting in a spacious, climate-controlled cabin. The submarine maintains normal atmospheric pressure throughout the dive, which is why the experience works for people who cannot tolerate pressure changes — pregnant women, those with heart conditions, ear problems or limited mobility can all go down. There are only 15 of these submarines in operation worldwide.

The cabin has 22 large portholes running down each side, one for nearly every pair of seats. You watch sea breams, rays, barracuda, eels, groupers and other Atlantic species move through the water, and the audioguide — available in 11 languages — identifies what you're seeing and explains the marine life. Shipwrecks rest on the ocean floor, and the guide points them out. Free color fish charts are provided so you can track what passes the window. Bring a camera; the portholes are designed for it.

The dive lasts about an hour from start to finish. Free daily bus service picks you up from Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca and takes you directly to the marina at Puerto Calero, where parking is also free. You descend a small ladder to enter the submarine cabin — the only physical step required. After the dive, you have free time to walk around Puerto Calero before the return transfer.

Top questions

What marine life will I actually see on the submarine dive?

The submarine descends to 30 meters where sea breams, rays, barracuda, eels and groupers are common in the Atlantic around Lanzarote. The audioguide identifies species as they appear at the portholes, and you also watch for shipwrecks resting on the seabed. What you see depends on the day and the season, but the portholes give nearly every seat a view.

Can I go on the submarine if I'm pregnant or have a heart condition?

Yes. The submarine cabin stays at normal atmospheric pressure throughout the dive, which means pregnant women, people with heart conditions and those with ear problems are not affected by pressure changes. Children from age 2 are welcome; children under 2 cannot go.

How long does the whole experience take, and what's included in the price?

The dive itself lasts about an hour. Pickup from Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca is included, as is the audioguide in your choice of 11 languages, a personalized dive certificate and free time at Puerto Calero before your return transfer.

Do I need diving experience or any special training?

No training or diving certification is required. You sit in a pressurized cabin the entire time and never enter the water. The submarine is designed for all physical fitness levels, though you do need to descend a small ladder to enter the cabin.

What if I want to take photos underwater?

Bring your camera. The 22 large portholes are positioned for photography, and the cabin lighting is set up to work with standard cameras and phones. The audioguide will tell you what you're photographing as it passes the window.
