Your First Breath Underwater: Scuba Diving in Lanzarote for Absolute Beginners

You meet your PADI instructor at Playa Chica, complete a shallow-water skills session to get comfortable breathing underwater, then dive the reef around Lanzarote for 30–40 minutes of exploration. All equipment, insurance, and a snack are included; small groups mean you get personal attention the whole time. You'll need to avoid flying for 12 hours after the dive.

2h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Meet instructor in Playa Chica
  • Organize equipment and complete paperwork
  • Instructor briefing and gear explanation
  • Practice skills in shallow water
  • Dive and explore underwater reef

The Experience

The moment you realize you're actually breathing underwater—that's the part nobody quite prepares you for. You're standing in the shallow water off Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen, your instructor right there beside you, and suddenly the panic you thought you'd feel just... doesn't show up. Instead there's this strange calm, this weightlessness, and the reef in front of you stops being a blurry idea and becomes real. That's what a try scuba dive in Lanzarote feels like when you've never done it before and you're not sure if you want to commit to a full certification course yet.

The whole thing starts on shore at the dive center, where you meet your PADI instructor and sort out the paperwork and equipment. They walk you through how everything works—the regulator, the buoyancy vest, why you can't just hold your breath—and then you wade into the shallow water to practice. This part matters more than it sounds. You're not rushing into the deep; you're learning to equalize your ears, to breathe slowly, to move without panicking, all in water where you can stand up if you need to. Once your instructor sees you're comfortable, you move out to the reef. The dive sites around Lanzarote are chosen specifically for beginners—easy entry from shore, protected, full of fish and coral but nothing that's going to chase you. You get maybe 30 to 40 minutes down there, exploring, watching the marine life, getting used to the feeling of moving through a completely different world.

What makes this work is that it's small groups—not a cattle call of twenty people—and your instructor is there the entire time, not just checking boxes. The dive insurance is included, so you're not signing away your life on some separate form. All the gear is there waiting for you; you don't rent it separately or wonder if it fits. They even throw in refreshments and a snack after, which sounds small but after breathing compressed air for an hour, it's nice. The only real constraint is the weather—Lanzarote's usually reliable, but if conditions turn, they'll reschedule you or refund you outright. And yeah, you can't fly or go above 300 meters for 12 hours after diving, so plan your day around that.

If you've been curious about scuba but not ready to drop money on a certification course, this is how you find out if it's actually for you. You get the real experience—the equipment, the reef, the fish, the breathing—without the three-day commitment. Most people either love it and book a certification the next week, or they realize it's not their thing and they've only spent a morning finding that out. Either way, you know.

Top questions

Do I need any diving experience or certification?
No. This is designed for first-timers. You'll learn the basics in shallow water before the reef dive, and your instructor stays with you the entire time.
What's included in the price?
PADI instructor, all dive equipment, dive insurance, refreshments and a snack after. You don't pay extra for any of those.
How long does the whole thing take?
Plan for about three to four hours from arrival to finish, including the briefing, shallow-water practice, the reef dive, and getting out of your gear.
What if the weather is bad?
If conditions aren't safe for diving, the dive center will offer you an alternative date or a full refund.
Can I go if I'm not a strong swimmer?
You should be comfortable in the water. If you're nervous about swimming, mention it to your instructor during the briefing—they'll work with you in the shallow section.
What's the age requirement?
Minimum age is 10 years old.
Do I need to fill out a health form?
Yes. You'll complete a health questionnaire before diving. Some conditions—like asthma or serious heart problems—may prevent you from diving, so check with your doctor beforehand if you have any concerns.
Can I fly home the same day?
No. You need to wait at least 12 hours after diving before flying or going above 300 meters in altitude. Plan your travel accordingly.
