itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Watch Panama Canal documentary
  • Observe ships at Miraflores locks
  • Visit Casco Viejo historic district
  • Walk Amador Causeway and islands
  • Stop at Chinese viewpoint by bridge
  • Shop for Panamanian crafts

We rolled out of the hotel just after breakfast, our guide José already waving from across the street. The city felt half-awake — humid air, a few birds fussing in the trees. First stop was the Panama Canal. I’d seen photos but standing there as those giant ships crept through Miraflores Locks? It’s almost too slow to believe. José told us about the engineering (he loves this stuff), and we watched a short film with Morgan Freeman narrating — his voice somehow made it all feel even bigger. I kept glancing at the water levels rising and falling; you could smell diesel and river mud in the air.

After that, we headed for Casco Viejo. The old town is all faded pinks and yellows, balconies stuffed with plants, kids darting around corners. We wandered through squares where people sat drinking coffee or playing dominoes — I tried to ask for directions in Spanish but mostly got smiles and hand gestures back. There was a breeze off the bay that carried a hint of salt and fried plantains from somewhere close by. We ducked into a church with cool stone floors; it was quiet inside except for our footsteps echoing.

The Amador Causeway came next — long stretch of road over water, linking three islands. You get these wild views of Panama City’s skyline on one side and ships lining up for the canal on the other. We stopped at those big colorful PANAMA letters (yeah, had to get a photo). Somewhere along there José pointed out pelicans diving for fish — he said they’re always here, even when traffic is nuts. Last bit was a quick stop at a craft market where everything smelled like wood polish and leather; I bought a tiny mola patchwork for my backpack.

We crossed the Bridge of the Americas just as afternoon clouds started piling up over the city — kind of dramatic light, actually. There’s this viewpoint called Mirador Chino where you can see everything: canal, skyline, green hills behind it all. I didn’t expect to feel so small looking out over that mess of ships and buildings but… yeah, it sticks with you.
