The Experience

The first thing I remember is the light—so sharp on the old stone walls of Casco Viejo that I had to squint. Our guide, Luis, waved us over to a tiny café tucked between pastel facades. He ordered us something called “geisha” coffee (I’d never heard of it), and honestly, I still think about that first sip—floral and almost sweet, nothing like what I drink at home. The air smelled faintly of sea and roasting beans. Luis pointed out bullet holes from an old uprising; he shrugged, said every wall here has a story if you know how to look.

We drove out along the Amador Causeway next. Windows down, wind tangling my hair, city skyline behind us and ships queuing for the Panama Canal ahead. There was this weird mix of quiet—the kind you only get near big water—and bursts of laughter from cyclists passing by. At Miraflores Locks we watched a giant cargo ship ease through the gates. It moved so slowly it almost looked staged. Some kid nearby shouted when the water started rushing in; everyone leaned closer to the railing like we could help somehow.

I didn’t expect El Poin to be so… playful? It’s this tall tower with wild swings and a glass floor (I chickened out on that one). My partner tried the zip line—Li laughed when I tried to say “valiente” in Spanish, probably butchered it. The view from up there made Panama City feel both huge and close at once—skyline on one side, jungle haze on the other. We ended up wandering Plaza de Francia where old men played dominoes under palm trees and someone sold ceviche from a cart. I can’t remember what time it was; everything slowed down for a bit.
