The Experience
Hands gripping the handlebars, I tried not to wobble as we set off along the Amador Causeway — salty breeze in my face, sunlight glinting off the water. Our guide, Jorge, waved us over when a cargo ship slid past on the Panama Canal. He told us about his uncle who worked there for decades; you could hear pride in his voice. I remember the smell of sunscreen mixing with fried plantains from a nearby stall — weird combo but somehow it fit. The city skyline looked almost unreal from here, all glass and blue sky.
We coasted into Casco Viejo just as church bells echoed down narrow streets. Jorge pointed out Plaza de Francia and explained how it honors the French workers lost during the canal’s first days — I didn’t know that story before. There were kids playing soccer in a corner, their shouts bouncing off faded colonial walls. At one point, I tried to pronounce “calzada” properly and just made everyone laugh (including myself). The old stones felt cool under my feet when we stopped for water, and I kept noticing little things: laundry flapping above us, someone selling raspados on the corner.
Lunch was simple but good — arroz con pollo at a spot Jorge liked. He said it’s where his family goes after Sunday mass. It tasted like home cooking; nothing fancy but comforting after biking through Panama City’s heat. By then I’d lost track of time. The ride back was quieter; maybe we were all tired or just taking it in. I still think about that view from Amador Causeway — something about seeing both the city and canal together sticks with you.
