The Experience
We rolled out from our hotel just after breakfast, the city already humming — horns somewhere in the distance, air thick but not too hot yet. Our guide, Luis, greeted us with a grin and a cooler full of bottled water (bless him). First stop was the Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal. I’d seen photos before but standing on that deck, watching a ship inch through with crew waving up at us — it’s different. The whole place buzzed with this odd mix of old machinery and new tourists. Luis pointed out the “mules” (those little trains guiding the ships) and explained how everything worked. I tried to follow but honestly got distracted by a kid nearby eating something bright pink — turned out to be “duro,” frozen juice on a stick. Luis handed me one later; tasted like guava and childhood summers.
After that we drove along the Amador Causeway, wind whipping in through the van window. The Pacific stretched out on both sides, dotted with little boats that looked almost toy-like from where we were. We stopped for a quick photo at the Biomuseo — wild colors against the sky — then crossed over toward the Bridge of the Americas. Luis joked about how locals still debate if it’s prettier at sunset or sunrise (I’m not sure I could choose). There’s something about seeing two continents connect that makes you feel small in a good way.
Casco Viejo was next — narrow streets lined with faded pastel buildings and iron balconies draped in laundry. We wandered for an hour or so; every corner seemed to hide another church or tiny café. At Plaza de Francia, I caved and bought a raspado (shaved ice) from an old man who barely looked up as he doused it in syrup. Sticky hands but worth it. The light was golden by then, bouncing off stone walls and making everything look softer somehow. We ended at the Panama Canal Museum (you can get dropped here if you want), but honestly I just sat outside for a minute listening to street musicians tuning up nearby. Still think about that view sometimes — not perfect, but real.
