The Experience

"Look, that ship’s barely squeezing through," our guide Luis said, pointing as we pressed up against the glass at the Miraflores Locks. I’d seen photos of the Panama Canal before but standing there — hearing the low groan of metal and water churning as a container ship inched forward — it felt different. The air was thick and salty, and I kept thinking how many people from all over must’ve stood right here, watching this same slow-motion ballet. Luis had answers for every odd question (even about how they get bananas onto those ships — apparently not as simple as you’d think).

Earlier, we wandered Casco Viejo’s narrow stone streets. There was this smell — like old coffee mixed with sea breeze — drifting out from a tiny café where two women were laughing in Spanish. The buildings looked sun-faded but proud, all pastel blues and pinks with laundry fluttering from balconies. I tried to say “buenos días” to a vendor selling mango slices; she grinned and handed me a piece dusted with chili. It burned in a good way. Our private tour made it easy to pause wherever caught our eye (which was often), no rush.

The drive along Amador Causeway was breezy — windows down, city skyline shining across the water. We stopped for a photo at those big PANAMA letters; honestly, it’s touristy but fun. Crossing the Bridge of the Americas felt surreal — knowing it’s the first bridge over the Canal line gave me this weird sense of scale. And then suddenly we were weaving through glass towers in the financial district, which looked almost sci-fi compared to Casco Viejo’s gentle chaos.

I’m still thinking about that mango slice and how Luis told us stories about his grandmother seeing the first ships pass through Miraflores. It wasn’t what I expected from a day trip in Panama City — slower maybe, more layered somehow.
