The Experience
We rolled out from our hotel just after breakfast—our guide, Luis, had this easy way about him, like he’d seen every side of Panama City but still enjoyed showing it off. The van was cool inside (thank god), but you could already feel the city waking up outside. First stop: the Panama Canal Visitors Center at Miraflores Locks. I didn’t expect to get so caught up watching those huge ships inch through the locks—everyone in the viewing gallery went quiet for a second when the gates opened. There’s this low hum from the machinery and a salty smell in the air that kind of sticks with you. Luis explained how it all works—he drew diagrams on a napkin later at lunch, which made me laugh.
After that we drove through Balboa and what used to be the Canal Zone—I think I missed half of Luis’ stories because I kept looking out at these odd little houses and faded signs left over from when Americans ran things here. Then we hit the Amador Causeway. It’s this long stretch out to three islands where you can see both ocean and city skyline at once (and yeah, everyone pulls out their phone for that shot). The breeze picks up here, mixing sea air with whiffs of fried plantains from a food cart. I tried to order some in Spanish; Luis grinned but didn’t correct me—probably for my pride.
Casco Viejo came last, just as the sun started getting heavy and gold on all those old stone walls. We wandered narrow streets past peeling paint and tiny balconies with laundry flapping above us. There was a guy playing guitar on a stoop—his voice drifted down an alley and for a second it felt like time slowed down. We ducked into a bakery for cold water (and some pastry I can’t pronounce), then just kept walking until my legs complained. Honestly, I still think about that view back toward downtown from Plaza Francia—it’s not what I pictured before coming here.
