The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound—distant horns and that low rumble as a container ship slid through the Miraflores Locks. Our guide, Luis, grinned when I pressed my face to the glass like a kid. The air smelled faintly metallic and humid, with a breeze that kept shifting as ships moved past. The buildings are faded yellow and pink with peeling paint, but somehow it feels alive instead of run-down. We stopped for coffee in a little café where an old man nodded at us without saying much. After that came Amador Causeway for lunch; you get this long view back toward Panama City’s skyline while pelicans drift by. My fish was fresh and salty—I still think about that taste sometimes when I hear traffic back home.
