The experience
The Miraflores Locks are the centerpiece: you stand at the Visitors' Center and watch container ships, tankers and bulk carriers rise and fall through the lock chambers as they cross the isthmus. The guide explains how the system works: the water that lifts each vessel, the timing, the scale of what moves through in a single day. It's the engineering that makes the canal work, and you see it happen.
After the locks, the tour moves to Casco Viejo, the old town that sits on a peninsula at the mouth of the bay. You walk through streets lined with colonial buildings, stop at the cathedral with its golden altar, pass the Bolivar Square and the French Square, and move through the ancient convents that mark the quarter's history. The neighborhood is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the architecture (balconies, tile work, the decay and restoration side by side) is what the walking tour lets you absorb at ground level. The Artisans' Market at Balboa is the last stop, where you can buy Panamanian crafts if you want a souvenir.
The Amador Causeway, built by the Americans to protect the canal's navigable channel, gives you a view of Panama City's modern skyline across the water. There's a duty-free shop there if you want to pick up something tax-free. The tour ends with a pass through the new city (the financial district, the shopping malls, the restaurants), so you see both the colonial past and the cosmopolitan present in one day.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and French.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years): free; Child (7 to 12 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What exactly do I see at the Miraflores Locks?
The Visitors' Center sits overlooking the lock chambers, and you watch ships actually transit through them. Container ships, tankers and other vessels rise and fall as they cross the isthmus. The guide explains the mechanics of how the water moves them through each chamber. It's live observation, not a film or a model.
Is lunch included in this tour?
Lunch is not included, but the tour has options: you can eat at a restaurant in Casco Viejo during the walking portion, or wait and dine in the modern city at the end of the day. The guide can recommend places.
Does the tour include hotel pickup?
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for most hotels in Panama City. If you're staying at the Westin Playa Bonita or Dreams Delight Playa Bonita, there's an additional charge of $15 per guest due to distance. You can add this at checkout if it applies to you.
