Miraflores Locks tour: Watch ships transit the Panama Canal
You watch cargo ships and tankers move through the locks while you stand on the terrace.
A three-hour guided tour of the Miraflores Visitor Center in Panama City, where you explore a four-level museum, watch an IMAX film about the Canal, and stand on terraces with a panoramic view of the Miraflores Locks. A local guide times the visit so you see ships transit through the locks in real time. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Miraflores Visitor Center and Views
- Enter Miraflores Visitor Center museum
- Watch Panama Canal film at theater
- Access terraces for panoramic canal view
- Observe ship transit through locks
- View Panama City and ships from Cinta Costera
The experience
The Miraflores Visitor Center sits directly on the Canal's most active section. Your guide meets you at your hotel and drives you there in an air-conditioned minivan, then walks you through the four-level museum, which traces the Canal's history and engineering. The IMAX theater runs a separate film about the Canal (tickets purchased on-site), and then you move to the outdoor terraces where the real draw happens: you watch container ships, tankers and bulk carriers line up and pass through the locks in real time. The guide times the arrival so you're there when ships are actually transiting, not waiting for something that might not come.
From the Cinta Costera viewpoint, you also see the queue of vessels waiting to enter the Canal from the Pacific. The whole visit is structured around what's happening on the water that day, not a fixed script. Bottled water is provided, and the minivan is air-conditioned, which matters in Panama's heat. The tour runs three hours total, including transport from your hotel.

Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 10 years); Infant (1 to 5 years): free.
What exactly is inside the Miraflores Visitor Center museum?
The museum spans four levels and covers the history and operation of the Panama Canal. It's designed to give you context before you step onto the terraces to watch the ships move through the locks.
Do I need to buy a separate ticket for the IMAX theater?
Yes, the IMAX film about the Canal is a separate purchase at the visitor center. Your guide will direct you to it, but it's not included in the tour price.
Will I actually see ships going through the locks, or is that not guaranteed?
Your guide times the visit to coincide with ship transits, so you watch them move through the locks in real time. The Canal operates continuously, so traffic is regular.
What's the difference between the three tour options available?
One option is the Miraflores Visitor Center alone; another combines it with Casco Viejo, the historic district; the third is an ocean-to-ocean tour covering all three locks. Choose based on how much time you want to spend and whether you want to see other parts of Panama City.
