The experience
Four to five hours means you move through five distinct stops without rushing any one of them. The tour starts at the Miraflores Locks, where you spend a full hour on the observation decks watching container ships and tankers rise or drop through the second-largest locks in the Panama Canal. The exhibition rooms between the decks walk you through how the system works and the history that built it, from the French attempt through the American completion and the nations that contributed to the project. You're not watching from a distance. You're standing where the water moves and the ships pass.
After Miraflores, the route turns inland to the former military bases. Clayton dates from 1919 and once housed more than 20,000 people: civilians and soldiers both. Corozal holds the American military cemetery and the train station that was the first transoceanic railway in the world. Albrook was the first American airfield in Panama. Balboa, the Zone's administrative capital, shows you the Panama Canal Administration Building, inaugurated in 1914 as a landmark of Panamanian history. The Amador Causeway, built on two former Army bases at the southern end of the Canal, closes the loop. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and travels with you the whole way. The vehicle is air-conditioned and comes with bottled water.
Entry to the Miraflores Visitor Center costs $17.22 per person, paid on site to the staff. The Canal Museum, which opens the itinerary, is $15 per person, also paid on site. Both are walkable from where the vehicle stops, and both are included in the route. You're not choosing whether to go, only whether to enter the buildings themselves. Depending on the option you choose, Miraflores entry may be separate from your booking.

Children from age 11 are welcome, and moderate fitness is enough for the walking between vehicle stops and through the visitor centers.
