Panama City and Canal sightseeing

  • Pick up at hotel
  • Watch intro movie at Miraflores Locks
  • Observe ships at Miraflores observation deck
  • Visit Amador Causeway islands
  • Explore Old Spanish Quarter (Casco Viejo)
  • Drive through Balboa Avenue and downtown Panama

The experience

You're picked up at your hotel and driven in a private vehicle to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center, where a 45-minute introductory film explains the canal's history. From the observation deck you watch container ships and tankers pass through the locks in real time: the water rises and falls to lift vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific. The scale of the operation becomes clear once you see it happen.

Next is the Amador Causeway, a narrow strip connecting three islands in Panama Bay. The causeway holds museums, gift shops, restaurants and a duty-free center. You can grab lunch and a cold Panama beer or simply walk the waterfront. From there the tour moves to Casco Viejo, the old Spanish quarter and a World Patrimonial Heritage Site. The neighborhood is dense with colonial-era buildings, churches, parks, shops and restaurants: the architecture and layout date back centuries, and the streets are narrow enough that walking feels like stepping backward in time. The final leg is a sightseeing drive through downtown Panama City and along Balboa Avenue.

Your driver provides live commentary in English throughout the day and handles all tolls and parking. The tour length depends on how much time you spend exploring Casco Viejo or the causeway. The operator quotes 4 to 8 hours total. A minimum of two passengers per booking applies.

Is this one for you?The tour runs 4 to 8 hours depending on how long you linger at each stop, so it works best for a full morning or afternoon rather than a quick outing. If you want to see the canal operations and explore both the causeway and Casco Viejo without arranging separate transport between them, this single booking covers all three in one route.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What exactly happens at the Miraflores Locks?

The Miraflores Locks Visitor Center includes a 45-minute film on the canal's history and an observation deck where you watch ships transit the locks in real time. The locks raise and lower the water level to move vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and you see this process happen as you stand there.

Is Casco Viejo just a museum, or can you walk around and explore?

Casco Viejo is a living neighborhood full of shops, restaurants, churches, parks and hotels alongside the colonial architecture. You walk the streets yourself. The tour includes time there but does not lock you into a guided itinerary within the quarter.

What can you do at the Amador Causeway?

The Amador Causeway has museums, gift shops, restaurants and a duty-free center. You can eat lunch, browse shops, enjoy a drink, or simply walk the waterfront and take in the view of Panama Bay and the three islands that make up the causeway.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

Most of the day is spent in the vehicle, but you'll walk at the Miraflores Locks observation deck, around the Amador Causeway, and through the streets of Casco Viejo. The amount of walking depends on how long you spend exploring each stop. You set the pace.

Do I need to book entrance fees in advance?

Entrance fees to the Miraflores Locks and any museums or attractions you visit are not included in the tour price and are paid separately. Your driver can direct you to ticket windows and help with logistics at each stop.
