The Experience

Ever wondered what it feels like to stand where two seas meet? That was my first thought as our driver wound us out of Tangier’s city center toward Cap Spartel. The air changed—salty, sharp, a little wild. Our guide, Youssef, pointed out the lighthouse where you can see the Atlantic and Mediterranean blur together. It’s not something I’d expected to feel so strongly about, but there’s this hush when you look out from there. Wind in your hair, sea spray on your face. I tried to take a photo but honestly… it didn’t do it justice.

The medina was another world—narrow lanes twisting past shops with bright spices piled up in pyramids and old men playing cards in doorways. Youssef led us through without rushing; he seemed to know everyone (and they all had something to say). At one point he stopped to buy us mint tea from a woman who barely looked up from her stove. The glass burned my fingers but tasted sweet and sharp at once. I fumbled my thanks in French and she just smiled—no judgment.

Lunch came after we’d poked around Grand Socco and Petit Socco—grilled fish, olives, bread so warm it steamed when we tore it open. We ate near the entrance to Hercules Cave, which was colder than I’d guessed inside. The sound echoed strangely off those ancient walls; Youssef told some story about Hercules resting there after his labors—I only half listened because I was busy watching sunlight spill through the cave mouth in that weird shape people say looks like Africa. Maybe it does? Or maybe you just want it to.
