Cap Spartel Lighthouse stands where two seas meet, and the Hercules Caves hold 4,500 years of myth and geology.

A private tour of Tangier with a licensed local guide covers the city's main landmarks in one day: Cap Spartel Lighthouse at the meeting point of the Mediterranean and Atlantic, the Hercules Caves with their sea and land openings, the 15th-century Kasbah fortress and its museum, the medina's narrow streets and markets, and a stop for mint tea in Petit Socco. Pickup from your port or hotel is included, and the guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French.

The experience

You arrive at the port or your hotel and a private air-conditioned vehicle picks you up. The route takes you through Boulevard Mohamed V and Place de France, past the Royal Palace, then to Parc Predicaris for views across the Strait of Gibraltar toward Southern Spain. From there, the drive heads north to Cap Spartel, where the lighthouse has stood since 1864 on a promontory overlooking the point where the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea converge: the sight alone justifies the stop, and the photo opportunities are endless.

Next is the Hercules Caves, a sea grotto with two openings (one to the ocean, one inland) that has existed for over 4,500 years. The interplay of light and shadow across the rock formations and the dramatic sea views make it a singular landscape. From there, the tour moves into the Kasbah, the 15th-century fortress that served as a palace for sultans. Inside, you walk through the Kasbah Mosque (built in the 17th century with intricate tile work and an ornate prayer hall) and the Kasbah Museum, which holds artifacts ranging from Roman mosaics to Islamic calligraphy, traditional costumes, and musical instruments that trace Tangier's history from prehistoric times to the present.

The medina comes next: a maze of narrow streets, hidden squares, colorful markets, and artisan shops where the scents of spices and teas fill the air. You'll pass through Grand Socco (Place du Grand 9 Avril 1947), the historic square that divides the old medina from the modern town and has hosted pivotal moments in Tangier's past. Mendoubia Gardens offers a quiet break with manicured flowerbeds, fountains, and benches overlooking the city. The tour also includes Saint Andrew Church, a blend of Gothic and Moorish architecture with stained glass and ornate ceilings; the Moshe Nahon Synagogue, a 17th-century building with a museum of Moroccan Jewish history; and optionally the American Legation, the only American national landmark outside the United States, gifted to the country by the Sultan in 1821. The day ends in Petit Socco, where you sit down with a cup of traditional mint tea, surrounded by the sounds and colors of the medina, before returning to your hotel or port.
