The experience
The tour starts with pickup in a private air-conditioned vehicle with Wi-Fi, then heads north along Boulevard Mohamed V and Avenue Pasteur toward Cap Spartel. The lighthouse, built in 1864, stands at the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea and overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar: the views alone make it a highlight of any Tangier sightseeing tour. From there, the route follows the Atlantic coastline to Achakar Beach, where you'll meet camels waiting on the sand and can ride or spend time with them for photos.
The Hercules Caves come next, a set of spectacular sea caves linked in Greek mythology to Hercules' Eleventh Labor and the golden apples of the Hesperides. After the coastal stops, the tour moves into the Medina, where the walking begins. Your guide leads you through the winding streets to the Grand Socco, the historic square that separates the old town from the Ville Nouvelle and witnessed Kaiser Wilhelm II's 1905 visit and King Mohammed V's 1947 speech. Petit Socco, also called Souk Dakhel, follows: a freshly painted square with Hispano-Moorish buildings, cafés, and shops where you can stop for traditional Moroccan mint tea and people-watch.
The Kasbah, Tangier's fortress neighborhood, sits on a hilltop with commanding views over the city and the Strait of Gibraltar. Your guide explains how it once served as the residence of the local ruler and a strategic defensive stronghold. The Great Mosque, a nineteenth-century landmark, stands in the heart of the Medina and carries centuries of history: originally a fifth-century Roman church, then a mosque under the Marinid Dynasty, a church again during Portuguese and English rule, and finally rebuilt as a mosque by Sultan Sulayman in 1815. If time permits, the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures, housed in the historic Dar Al Makhzen palace and open 10am to 6pm except Tuesdays, offers deeper context on the civilizations that shaped Tangier.
