The Experience

The first thing that hit me in Tangier was the mix of salt air and something sweet — maybe oranges from a nearby stall? Karim was already waving at us outside the hotel, grinning like he’d known us for years. He handed out cold water and asked if we wanted to start with the Medina or get some sea air first. We went for the Medina — those narrow alleys are a maze, but Karim seemed to know every shortcut. He stopped to greet an old friend selling leather slippers (babouches, I think?) and somehow convinced me to try on a bright yellow pair. I looked ridiculous but everyone laughed, so it felt right.

We left the city buzz behind for Achakkar Beach, where camels were waiting — they looked even taller up close than I’d expected. The camel ride was bumpy but kind of soothing after all that walking; you can hear the waves and there’s this soft wind off the Atlantic that makes everything smell clean. Karim told us stories about Cap Spartel as we drove there — apparently it’s where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, which sounds poetic but when you’re standing by that old lighthouse looking out at two different blues… yeah, it sticks with you.

I didn’t expect to care much about caves (Caves of Hercules sounded like a tourist trap), but inside it’s cool and echoey and there’s this opening shaped almost like Africa itself. Some kids were skipping stones outside while their dad tried to explain Phoenicians to them in French — I only caught half of it but still, felt like being part of someone else’s afternoon. Lunch was optional but we couldn’t resist: Karim took us to a tiny place near Place Petite Socco where mint tea comes in glasses so hot you have to hold them by the rim. The food was simple — grilled fish, olives, fresh bread — nothing fancy but somehow perfect after all that moving around.

The Kasbah sits above everything; its gardens are quiet except for birds and distant city noise. Karim pointed out details in the tiles I would’ve missed: little stars tucked into corners, faded from sun and time. There’s a calm up there that surprised me — I keep thinking about it now back home when things get loud.
