The experience
How do you fit the main sights of Tangier into one day without driving yourself? A minivan picks you up and a licensed guide handles the route, the history and the stops. The tour moves through the new city past the Grand Mosque and the King's Palace, then heads north toward Asilah, a coastal town known for its art and ocean views. Along the way you'll stop at the point where the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet at Cape Spartel, marked by a lighthouse 44 kilometers north of the city.
The camel ride happens at Achakkar Beach near Cape Spartel: a short ride along the Atlantic coast, not a long trek. After that, the tour moves into Perdicaris park, a forest with panoramic views over the ocean and the surrounding landscape, named after an American businessman kidnapped here in 1904. Then comes the Hercules Caves, a two-chambered site next to the King's summer palace. The sea entrance is known as "The Map of Africa" because its shape resembles the continent when viewed from the water. The cave dates back 2,500 years.
Back in Tangier, you'll walk the medina's narrow streets and explore the Petit Socco, once one of Morocco's greatest markets and home to notable writers, businessmen and diplomats. The Kasbah Museum sits in a palace complex built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, perched on a hill overlooking the city. Lunch happens at a local restaurant, you choose what to eat, and mint tea and coffee come throughout the day. The tour wraps in the afternoon, leaving your evening free.
