The Experience

The ferry leaves Tarifa port—you'll need to arrive an hour before departure, and ferry tickets arrive a day in advance. Once in Tangier, your driver and licensed guide meet you at the port and take you straight into the old medina, the maze of small streets where the city's history lives. You walk through the colorful souks and markets, past the cafes and hotels around Petit Socco square, learning how the medina became home to artists, writers, diplomats and businessmen. The guide points out the craftsmanship unique to Morocco as you move through the stalls.

From there the van heads toward Achakkar Beach, where you ride a Moroccan camel on the golden sand at the exact point where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. The tour stops at the Tangier Kasbah, the residential fortress that was once the Sultan Moulay Ismail's palace in the 17th century—it sits at the highest point of the old city, overlooking the fishing port and the water below. Cape Spartel comes next, the lighthouse built in 1864 to control traffic through the Strait of Gibraltar. Then you visit the Hercules Caves, the legendary cave system where Hercules is said to have rested after separating the European and African continents.

Lunch happens at one of Tangier's best restaurants, where the menu includes couscous, tagine of fish or chicken or lamb, and Moroccan pastries to finish. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. Between the sites you have time to shop in the souks and Berber markets.
