The Experience

You're picked up from your hotel or cruise ship port and driven through Tangier's narrow Medina streets to the Petit Socco, once the greatest souk in Morocco. The guide walks you through the colorful markets and spice bazaars, pointing out the artisan weaving factories and hidden alleyways that give the city its character. There's time to browse and shop without pressure, and the guide explains what you're seeing as you move through the old quarters.

The tour takes you to the Kasbah, a hilltop palace complex built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, where you enter the grounds and see the gardens and fortress walls overlooking the city. From there you head north to Cape Spartel, where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet. You'll ride a camel along the Atlantic beach — a moment most visitors come to Tangier for — and take photographs with the lighthouse and the strait visible across the water. The Caves of Hercules sit just below, an archaeological complex with two entrances; the sea-facing opening is shaped like the African continent when viewed from the water, a formation believed to be Phoenician in origin.

The drive back passes through Perdicaris Park and the Armelat Forest, named after a 1904 kidnapping that became an international incident. Your guide shares the history while you rest in the air-conditioned vehicle. Coffee, tea or fresh orange juice is served during the tour, and WiFi is available on board if you need it. The whole experience runs 4 to 5 hours, ending with drop-off back at your hotel or port.

What's included in the Tangier tour price?

The tour includes private transportation with an air-conditioned vehicle, hotel or port pickup and drop-off, a professional local guide in English or Spanish, entry to the Kasbah, a camel ride at Cape Spartel, coffee or tea or fresh orange juice, WiFi on board, and time to explore and shop in the markets and Medina.

Can I book this tour if I'm arriving by cruise ship?

Yes — the tour includes pickup and drop-off at the cruise port, and the 4- to 5-hour duration is designed to fit a port day. Your guide will coordinate the timing so you're back before the ship departs.

What are the Caves of Hercules actually like?

The Caves of Hercules are an archaeological complex carved into the rock at Cape Spartel, with two entrances — one opening to the sea and one to the land. The sea entrance is shaped like the African continent when viewed from the water, a formation believed to be created by the Phoenicians. The cave sits next to the summer palace of the King of Morocco.

Is the camel ride included, or do I pay extra?

The camel ride at Cape Spartel beach is included in the tour price. You'll ride along the Atlantic coast as part of the itinerary, and it's a good opportunity for photographs with the lighthouse and the strait in the background.

What's the Kasbah, and what do I see there?

The Kasbah is a hilltop fortress and palace complex built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. Entry is included, and you'll walk through the palace grounds and gardens while your guide explains the history and points out the views over Tangier and the strait.

Are children allowed on this tour?

Yes — children are welcome from age 1 onward. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with a baby, and the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels.
