The experience
The tour starts with hotel or port pickup and moves through Tangier in an air-conditioned minivan. Your licensed guide narrates in English or Spanish as you drive along the corniche toward the new city, passing the Grand Mosque and the King's Palace. The route heads north toward Cape Spartel, where the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean meet: a viewpoint 44 kilometers from the lighthouse at Cape Trafalgar on the Spanish coast. This is where the camel ride happens: a small ride along the beach at the meeting point of the two seas.
After the beach, you visit the Caves of Hercules, a complex of caverns next to the King's summer palace. The sea entrance is known as "The Map of Africa" because its shape resembles the continent when viewed from the water. A formation believed to have been carved by the Phoenicians. Entry to the caves costs 8 euros per person and is optional. The Kasbah comes next: a hilltop complex of castles and gardens built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, with views over the city and the strait.
The final part of the day is a walking tour into the Medina, the old walled city. You explore the narrow streets and Petite Socco, once one of Morocco's greatest markets and home to writers, diplomats and businessmen. The guide points out colorful local markets and the craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans. At lunch time, you can try one of the world's most diverse cuisines at a local restaurant. The tour includes time for shopping and photo stops at the best viewpoints, with complimentary bottled water and local drinks throughout. Hotel or port drop-off ends the day.
