The experience
The tour starts with breakfast before moving through the Kasbah, the 14th-century fortress that once guarded the Mediterranean entrance. Narrow lanes and whitewashed walls open onto views over the port and Gibraltar. From there, you drop into the Old Medina: a maze of artisan shops, spice stalls and the Petit Socco, a square that once drew spies and writers from across the world. The guide walks you through the layers: Moroccan, Andalusian and colonial architecture all mixed into the same alleyways.
The Caves of Hercules sit on the coast outside the city, their entrance shaped like the African continent. A natural formation that has drawn visitors for centuries. The cave overlooks the Atlantic, and the legend says Hercules rested here after splitting Europe from Africa. From there, the route moves to Cape Spartel, the point where the Atlantic and Mediterranean actually meet, with panoramic views across the strait. A 30-minute camel ride on the beach breaks up the walking, and lunch happens partway through the day.
You'll also pass through Perdicaris Forest, a pine and eucalyptus reserve with views toward Gibraltar, and stop at a spices, oils and perfumes cooperative where the guide can explain the trade. The tour ends with mint tea or coffee. An air-conditioned vehicle moves the group between stops, and the pace suits all fitness levels. Pickup is included from your hotel or cruise port, so the day is built around your arrival time.
