The experience
Four hours is enough to move through Tangier without rushing. You start from your hotel, airport or cruise ship, then head to the Tangier Kasbah: a hilltop palace complex built by Sultan Moulay Ismail with views over the old city. Inside, the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures holds archaeological finds and ethnographic pieces. From there, the tour moves to the Caves of Hercules, where two entrances frame the site: one opens to the sea and frames a natural opening locals say resembles the shape of Africa, believed carved by Phoenicians. The cave sits below the summer palace of the King of Morocco.
Cape Spartel comes next, a promontory 1,000 feet above sea level at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, 12 kilometers west of Tangier and the northwesternmost point of the African continent. From the cape you watch the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. The camel ride happens on the Atlantic sandy beach nearby: a moment most travelers come to Tangier to experience. After that, the Medina opens up for shopping and wandering, and you'll stop for coffee, tea or fresh orange juice before heading back.
Your guide is a licensed local who speaks English or Spanish and knows both the famous sites and the neighborhoods tourists usually miss. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and if you're arriving by cruise ship, pickup and drop-off happen at the port. Entry to the Kasbah, the Caves of Hercules museum, and the Moshe Nahon Synagogue are included, as is WiFi on board.
